Andrejzki*

*It means something that i don't know in Polish :). This is how the Polish girls promoted the fortunetelling night to us.

On November 30th, we celebrated the St Andrew's night with the initiative of Kamila, Kasia and Asia. As far as I heard, the main purpose of Andrzejki celebrations is to predict the future of unmarried girl, especially her prospects for a good marriage. This night is also celebrated in other Eastern Europe countries such as Slovakia, Czech, Russia, Romania, Ukraine and even in Greece.

There are different ways of predicting future:

1) Pouring hot melted wax (in the past also melted tin or lead) through a key into a bawl of cold water - hardened wax is held up to the light and the future is guessed from its shadow cast on the wall. The lights are usually off (except the light of the candle). It not only help to read from the shadow but also helps to keep an unusual atmosphere of this evening. The shape of the shadow is observed from different angles and the future of the girl (especially her marital future is guessed from it). In the past not a usual key was used to this ritual but a key from door in the church was the best.
Prediction for me: I will marry a black guy, and move to Africa. There will be farms near to our place. I will work not in a company but a nongovernmental organisation. haha! :)

2) Four cups flipped upside down to cover a ring, a leaf, a coin and nothing - girls are choosing one cup and it indicate their future fate- the ring signify the love, leaf - marriage, coin is the money and nothing is unfortunately nothing...
My prediction : leaf = marriage! haha!

3) to toss the shoes - shoes of all people are arranged one after another along the wall and moved gradually in the same order to the door. The one whose shoe would first cross the doorstep would be married first.
Result : Feidy!!! Indonesian casanova.

4) Choosing the husband with the needle. Names of the guys/girls are written on a piece of paper and each person touches the other side of the paper with a needle. The one they touched is the person they are going to get married with.
Mine = Marcin (he is not black) ?!? :)

Unfortunately from the very beginning all the signs weren't right for me so i cant say that i was very much impressed with my future prediction. However it was fun, especially ''Feidy with the red wig'' part. :P
